Mars Hill Wind Project Photo by Sara Lovitz |
The turbines on Mars Hill are spinning today, generating both clean electricity and interest in wind power. Take a minute to learn more about the turbines, hear from Mars Hill residents, and see what the town has to offer if you choose to go visit. Mars Hill provides an excellent opportunity to learn firsthand what a large-scale wind project is like; it is currently the only large project in New England. Mars Hill is located in Aroostook County approximately two hours north of Bangor on Route 1, in the heart of potato country.

One of Northern Maine's best kept secrets is right in Mars Hill. The Mars Hill Country Club is located at the base of Mars Hill Mountain, with 18 holes of rolling greens through stands of hardwood trees and small ponds. The New England Golf Guide has rated the Mars Hill Country Club among the top 10%, one of very few clubs in Northern Maine to receive this distinction. The golf course is open from late April through October. Check out their events page online!

View the turbines as you hike along the International Appalachian Trail on Mars Hill Mountain. The 525-mile International Appalachian Trail/Sentier International des Appalaches (IAT-SIA) follows the spine of the Appalachian Mountains from Mount Katahdin to Cap Gaspe at the easternmost tip of the Gaspe peninsula in Quebec. Along the route, hikers will find incredible mountain scenery, pastoral countryside, and rugged coastline. The southern end of the trail begins in Maine’s own Baxter State Park. The route heads north through boreal forests, continuing along trails and roads to the potato fields of Aroostook County. Beyond Mars Hill, the IAT enters New Brunswick and tracks northeast through Mount Carleton Provincial Park. http://www.internationalat.org/Pages/index
